The scientific and technological ecosystem of the Principality

It is made up of public and private institutions and centers that in some cases focus their activity on research and in others combine research with teaching, dissemination activities or the exploitation of results, as in the R&D&I centers of companies.

The Government of Asturias has the Science, Technology and Innovation Plan, which focuses on talent and research excellence, the promotion of knowledge transfer to the productive sector and business R&D&I. The document includes more than thirty measures until 2027, with a funding of 200 million.

Commitment to talent

This section includes actions to promote scientific vocations, guarantee the development of professional careers in R&D&I, both in the scientific and business fields, and attract and retain talent. There are programs and a dozen calls for proposals, most of which are already underway, including the Severo Ochoa, Margarita Salas, Jovellanos, etc. programs.

The development of a comprehensive plan for attracting and retaining talent, which will include programs that may currently be scattered, should be highlighted.

Excellent research

The objectives are focused on supporting excellence and the internationalization of Asturian science and aligning research with business needs and the requirements of smart specialization.

Business R&D&I

The objective is to increase the number of companies that carry out R&D&I and participate in national and European networks and consortiums. The plan includes eleven programs aimed at making Asturian companies more competitive through innovation and technology. Together with the calls that are already underway, the plan focuses on the circular economy and the digital transformation of companies, especially SMEs.

Transfer and collaboration

The objective is to promote the transfer of knowledge to the productive fabric, to facilitate the arrival of new products and services to the market, and to favor greater links between the scientific and business spheres. The proposals are focused on ten programs, including Scientific Missions, the promotion of clusters, network projects and laboratories open to academia and business.

Transversal axes

The PCTI aims at an efficient Administration, with five programs that include, among other issues, the improvement of administrative processes, the development of public procurement of innovation, the implementation of an R&D&I observatory and the promotion of a plan to position the Government of Asturias in international networks, platforms and consortiums.

Business R&D&I centers in Asturias

Asturias promotes the activity of business R&D&I centers located in the region and promotes the creation or start-up of new ones.

The R&D&I centers of the companies are a pole of knowledge generation and constitute an important formula of rapprochement between the business world and the scientific/technical world, developing lines of work of high specific interest for the companies that, in collaboration and coordination with the rest of regional agents, delve into the development of the challenges of the S3 to improve the competitiveness of the Principality of Asturias.

Technology Centers

The Technology Centers are private, non-profit research organizations that have their own material and human resources necessary to carry out activities aimed both at generating technological knowledge and facilitating its exploitation to improve the competitiveness of companies and the general benefit of society.

In addition, they provide a support service for innovation and technology transfer, which is essential for regional R&D&I. The Asturian centers collaborate in different programs with public funding and are part of public-private consortiums to promote research and innovation.
